Economics for Common People – Part 21 Economic Development & Human Development
1️⃣ Economic Growth vs Economic Development
Economic Growth means an increase in GDP or national income.
Economic Development means improvement in people's quality of life.
Growth focuses on numbers. Development focuses on people.
2️⃣ Why GDP Alone Is Not Enough
A country may have high GDP,
but:
- Poverty may still exist.
- Healthcare may be weak.
- Education may be unequal.
- Income inequality may be high.
GDP does not show distribution of income.
3️⃣ Human Development
Human Development focuses on:
- Health
- Education
- Standard of living
The Human Development Index (HDI) measures these factors.
4️⃣ Real-Life Example
If a country builds:
- Good schools
- Hospitals
- Clean drinking water
- Employment opportunities
That is real development.
5️⃣ Sustainable Development
Development should not destroy the environment.
Development must meet present needs without harming future generations.
6️⃣ True Meaning of Development
Development means:
- Reduction of poverty
- Equal opportunities
- Social justice
- Economic stability
Real development improves human life — not just economic statistics.
