Economics for Common People – Part 2 Needs, Wants & Scarcity
1️⃣ What Are Needs?
Needs are things that are necessary for survival.
- Food
- Water
- Shelter
- Clothing
- Basic healthcare
Without needs, life becomes difficult or impossible.
2️⃣ What Are Wants?
Wants are things that make life comfortable or enjoyable.
- Smartphone
- Car
- Air conditioner
- Branded clothes
Wants are unlimited.
As income increases, wants also increase.
3️⃣ The Problem of Scarcity
Human wants are unlimited.
But resources are limited.
- Limited income
- Limited time
- Limited land
- Limited natural resources
This mismatch creates Scarcity.
4️⃣ Real-Life Example
Imagine you have ₹5,000.
You want:
- New shoes
- Books
- Headphones
- Clothes
But ₹5,000 is not enough for everything.
So you must choose.
That act of choosing is the foundation of Economics.
5️⃣ Why This Is Important
Scarcity forces individuals, businesses, and governments to make decisions.
- Families decide how to spend income.
- Businesses decide what to produce.
- Governments decide where to invest public money.
Needs are limited. Wants are unlimited. Resources are scarce. Economics studies how we manage this reality.
