Cell – Complete Explanation
Biology | Natural Science
1. What is a Cell?
A cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of life. All living organisms are made up of cells, and all biological processes occur within cells.
Cells were first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 while examining cork using a microscope.
2. Cell Theory
The cell theory was developed by Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, and later improved by Rudolf Virchow.
- All living organisms are composed of cells.
- The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living organisms.
- All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
3. Types of Cells
Cells are mainly classified into two types:
Prokaryotic Cells
- Primitive and simple cells
- No true nucleus
- Example: Bacteria
Eukaryotic Cells
- More complex cells
- True nucleus present
- Example: Animal cells and plant cells
4. Structure of a Cell
A typical cell contains three main parts:
Cell Membrane
- Protective outer layer
- Controls movement of substances in and out of the cell
Cytoplasm
- Jelly-like substance inside the cell
- Contains cell organelles
Nucleus
- Control center of the cell
- Contains genetic material (DNA)
5. Importance of Cells
- Cells perform metabolic activities
- Cells help in growth and reproduction
- Cells store genetic information
- Cells maintain life processes
