Cell Organelles and Their Functions

Biology | Natural Science

1. Mitochondria

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they produce energy in the form of ATP through cellular respiration.

  • Generate cellular energy
  • Important for metabolism

2. Ribosomes

Ribosomes are responsible for protein synthesis. They read genetic information from RNA and produce proteins.

3. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

The endoplasmic reticulum helps in the transport of materials inside the cell.

  • Rough ER: Contains ribosomes and produces proteins
  • Smooth ER: Produces lipids and helps detoxify chemicals

4. Golgi Apparatus

The Golgi apparatus modifies, packages, and distributes proteins and other molecules within the cell.

5. Lysosomes

Lysosomes contain digestive enzymes that break down waste materials and damaged cell parts. They are sometimes called the "suicide bags of the cell".

6. Vacuoles

Vacuoles store water, nutrients, and waste materials. Plant cells usually have a large central vacuole.

7. Chloroplasts

Chloroplasts are found in plant cells and are responsible for photosynthesis. They contain the green pigment chlorophyll.

8. Nucleus

The nucleus is the control center of the cell. It stores DNA and regulates cellular activities such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
